LOCAL PROFESSIONAL FIRMS PITCH AGAINST EACH OTHER FOR CHARITY

A local worthy cause was bowled over when they received a £500 cheque for monies raised at a charity cricket match held at Sidmouth Cricket Club.  Organised by wealth management company, Brewin Dolphin Exeter; team members donned their whites and challenged local professionals Kitsons Solicitors to a friendly match in aid of Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW), charity of the year for both firms. The 20 /20 match was won by Brewin Dolphin, shirt sponsor for the club, however the real winners were CHSW!

EXETER SPORTING CLUB SUMMER 2014 DINNER

@ The Thistle Rougemont Hotel
Queen St, Exeter
Wednesday 11th June
7 - 11. 45pm

With special guest  former England cricketer MATTHEW HOGGARD MBE. A Leeds-born medium-fast bowler and right-handed batsman, "Hoggie" played initially for his local Club Bradford League before spending 13 seasons at Yorkshire CCC until 2009. He then captained Leicestershire from 2010 until his retirement last year. Along the way he won 67 England caps, the first in 2000, and also played in 26 One Day Internationals.

Working alongside Matthew in a quasi double act will be CHRIS COWDREY. The eldest cricketing son of England legend and life peer Colin (The Lord) Cowdrey (of Tonbridge) CBE, Chris was an all-rounder who played for Kent for 15 seasons until 1991. With only 6 England caps and 3 One Day Internationals to his name, some say he was unfairly treated in 1988 when, elected England Captain for the 4th Test of a 5 match Series against the West Indies who were already 2-0 up, England lost heavily by 10 wickets. After that one appearance he was injured and never chosen to captain or play for England again. For many years since, Chris has enjoyed a well-deserved reputation as an outstanding raconteur.

Bringing up the rear is JOSH DANIELS. Originally intent on becoming a professional musician, Josh's inate sense of humour began to take over and he started to write and perform his own unique brand of stand-up comedy. He has since established a fine reputation up and down the country as a versatile and talented entertainer who is particularly at home in the corporate and after-dinner market.

An event not to be missed!

CHARTERED ACCOUNTANTS CELEBRATE ‘ACCOUNTANCY FIRM OF THE YEAR’

The partners of Haines Watts, Exeter celebrate national success as ‘Accountancy Firm of the Year – Small, Medium Size Entities (SMEs’), at the annual Financial Directors (FDs) Excellence Awards.  This award follows on the back of the Haines Watts group winning ‘Auditor of the Year’ in the SME category for two consecutive years beating off stiff competition from other leading local firms.

Exeter Partners, Patrick Tigwell, Ben de Cruz and David Park toast the Haines Watts group award success

Ben de Cruz, Managing Partner Haines Watts Exeter says: “It’s great to see Haines Watts win such a prestigious award particularly as it is voted for by business people, and not by an academic panel of experts, who recognise that we offer our clients an award-winning accountancy service. It’s also fantastic that Haines Watts is the first firm ever to have won an award in three consecutive years and I’m delighted that the group has been crowned Accountancy Firm of the Year for SME’s.”

The FDs' Excellence Awards are the most prestigious programme recognising the UK's top finance directors and their service providers that support Britain's finance community using the results of an annual survey, in which FDs and financial decision-makers recorded their opinion.
The glittering awards ceremony held in Grosvenor Square, London was hosted by Real Business in association with the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) and supported by the Confederation of British Industry (CBI).

Ben de Cruz adds: “Our core client base is owner-managed businesses, so to get this endorsement from SME businesses means a great deal to us.  We are proud of all of our staff in both the Exeter and Crediton offices who do an outstanding job for our clients on a daily basis.  It is because of their contribution and commitment to giving outstanding service that has helped us to win an award for the third year running which is an amazing achievement.”

Charity celebrates coming of age at Business Expo

The Devon Business Expo organised by TheBestOf Exeter and launching on Thursday 5th June at Matford Centre, announces its ‘charity of the year’ Dream-A-Way, celebrating its 21st anniversary, as the designated show charity.  A charity raffle will be held to raise much needed monies for this local worthy cause at the after-show drinks reception sponsored by Business Network (SW).

The business exhibition sponsored by BasePoint Business Centres, supporting sponsor Glen King PR and Express & Echo as the official media partner, will have over 100 exhibitors showcasing their  products and services from across the region with a capacity of up to 1000 visitors at this one-day event.

The exhibition’s designed charity, Exeter registered Dream-A-Way, provides grants for holidays and day trips to people of all ages with any sort of disability who live in Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.  With a loyal team of volunteers, the charity prides itself on giving all the monies raised by supporters to fund trips and do not take any funds for overheads or expenses.

The charity has helped over 10,000 local people since it was established in 1993.  Last year it enabled nearly 2000 individuals to enjoy a very special experience and days out.  Over 1200 guests enjoyed caravan holidays in Devon by the sea and 100 have fulfilled their dream holiday.

Chairman Jeff Merrett MBE says: “Dream-A-Way has always valued close relationships with local businesses and we are honoured to have been chosen as the Charity of the Year for TheBestOf Exeter and selected as the designated charity for the exciting new Devon Business Expo. Without this type of support we would have been unable to help so many amazing local people. We very much look forward to meeting up with even more local businesses at this wonderful new initiative.”

Exeter-girl Catherine who had a liver transplant 15 years’ ago when she was just a baby, was whisked away at the end of last year on a Dream-A-Way holiday to Portugal.  She was joined by Dad Martin, mother Heather and her brother Ryan for a much needed family Christmas break.

She comments: “It was amazing being able to spend Christmas on the beach, we even made a snowman, well a sand man! I jumped into the freezing cold swimming pool and splashed around in the glorious sea. My amazing experience was all thanks to the wonderful Dream-A-Way team.  The trip marked the 15 year anniversary of my liver transplant which I celebrated in December 2013 and it was the best way I could have marked it, ever.  Dream-A-Way for me has been like the tooth fairy, I may have had a tough time but when I look under my pillow, as if by magic, life has a new silver lining and that’s all thanks to the Dream Team”

Brewin Dolphin Exeter reacts to the Budget

Tim Walker the Head of Brewin Dolphin’s office in Exeter said,

“Like a phoenix from the flames, Osborne’s policy sees the British pension rise from its deathbed, freed from fears over stealth taxes and over complication. This is a total game changer, and will result in the almost immediate death of the annuity – for which we have long called for. It is a huge change in the flexibility of the pension system, with lower taxes and higher lump sums. We welcome the fact that the government is willing to trust people with their own finances and await clarification on how the vast amount of necessary advice will be delivered.”

“The Chancellor has removed the ‘nanny knows best’ aspect of the ISA – allowing a far broader range of products, and the ability to switch from shares to cash and back again. With a massive increase in the amount that can be sheltered in an ISA wrapper, as well as the inclusion of peer to peer lending and shorter dated retail bonds, the ISA is now a far sharper tool in the tax planning toolkit.“

“Given the importance of retired individuals to Devon’s economy we expect these changes will have a local impact. We also expect to see a significant rise in the demand for advice on how best to benefit from the new rules.”

The big budget decider: Can the Government afford the nation not to save?

Our panel of experts will be tweeting and commenting throughout the Budget on 19th March from @Brewin_Guy

Wealth manager Brewin Dolphin unveils its budget predictions

A key focus of this year’s budget is likely to be pensions and the increasing demand for reform in the annuity market. Nick Fitzgerald, head of financial planning, said, “We are always busy with pensions in the approach to the end of the financial year, but this year we have not noticed a discernible increase above the usual, of clients rushing to top up their pension pots.

“The world of pensions is increasingly less certain with a loss of trust in the stability of the regime. Over recent years we have seen a constant nibbling away at the incentives to save; reducing lifetime allowances; a fear of means testing for the state pension; investments in pension funds no longer receiving dividend tax credits – which were a huge incentive in the past; and now more and more pension savers are paying higher rate tax in retirement. Altogether, these changes are making ISAs a more attractive long term savings vehicle.
“There is a growing fear that pension savings are an easy target for stealth taxes. A commitment from the government that pension reliefs will not be tinkered with for the lifetime of the next Parliament would help restore trust, especially in the face of Labour’s intention to restrict higher rate tax relief - costing pension savers an estimated £1 billion per annum.   If we are to avoid seeing further erosion of pensions, we must regain confidence in the Government’s intentions on incentives and also push hard for reform of the annuity market.”

Members of the Brewin Dolphin team have given their key predictions:

PENSIONS

Richard Harwood, divisional director financial planning - predicts:
·         Restrictions on some of the more esoteric investments that can be held in pension schemes.
·         Possible new limits to pension tax relief that may hit the ‘squeezed middle’
·         Announcement that small pension pots – say <£40k – will no longer be forced to buy an annuity

“The government has put in place measures to further limit tax reliefs to those thought of as wealthy.  It would seem that there is political will to restrict tax reliefs so the limits may be tightened further in future, but there is a danger that these will again hit the ‘squeezed middle’”.

TAX & NI

Guy Foster, head of portfolio strategy - predicts:
·         A clear political and economic rationale exists for raising the national minimum wage beyond the 3% recommended by the low pay commission, although the likely casualty of such a move might be further advances in the personal allowance.
·         The distinction between income tax and NI is now so blurred as to be meaningless and this nettle needs to be grasped.

Guy Foster commented, “Mr Osborne has been quite clear about the type of budget he is planning. Large scale giveaways aren't justified by either the political or economic cycle this year.  Even as inflation falls, however, the accumulated decline in real incomes from rising prices and stubbornly inert wages remains a hindrance to economic prospects.  A big issue therefore is what he may do for the low paid.”

VCT & EIS

Richard Harwood, divisional director financial planning - predicts:
·         Possible increase in investment limits for Venture Capital Trusts and Enterprise Investment Schemes.
·         Further tweaking of the rules to ensure that eligible investments are not just tax-relief schemes.

“Increasingly EISs and VCTs are providing funding for businesses that would traditionally be the domain of banks.  But we would not be surprised if there was further tweaking of the rules on what investments are approved in order to ensure that there is true risk within the plans and that they are not just schemes to maximise tax reliefs.”

TAX AVOIDANCE

Richard Harwood, divisional director financial planning - predicts:

“This continues to be a priority and any victory in court for HMRC is strongly publicised, so we should expect the closure of perceived loopholes to be highlighted.”

ISAs

Rob Burgeman, divisional director predicts
“We would welcome a commitment from the Government to ISAs as a core long term savings vehicle for UK citizens.  Speculation is building that there may be changes here and the uncertainty is most unwelcome and destabilising at a time when every encouragement should be given to those seeking to ensure their long term financial security. Any restrictions on ISA savings will drive the spare savings flow into the already overheated property market.”

CAPITAL GAINS TAX REFORM

Rob Burgeman, divisional director predicts:

“Greater simplification is required over CGT, especially as savers are now being taxed on inflation since the indexation of book costs was removed. How long before we will see fair differentiation in the taxation of short term speculation and long term investment?”

How to become an ISA Millionaire

Tim Walker - Head of Brewin Dolphin Exeter

The traditional routes to becoming a millionaire – marriage, inheritance, the lottery or a genius business idea – might seem a bit fanciful to many of us but, with ISA season upon us, reports suggest that there may be many ISA millionaires in the UK already. In fact several ISA investors at Brewin Dolphin, through judicial investment directly in equities, have amassed ISAs worth over £1 million. Brewin Dolphin has 15 clients with ISAs worth millions each and 40 with ISAs over £750k; though these clients pursued a direct equity strategy and were certainly prepared to take risks. The total value of all Brewin Dolphin ISA portfolios is over £4.7 billion.

Analysts at Brewin Dolphin have calculated that it could take less than 30 years for anyone using their ISA allowance before the end of the tax year and annually thereafter to achieve millionaire status. With conservative assumptions on growth and income (5% combined) and inflation (2.5%), 2042 would see a total fund of £1,030,953 representing a gain of £522,180 on a total investment of £508,773. The total tax saving over this period would be an impressive £292,215 and a £1 million tax free fund for life.

Tim Walker, head of Brewin Dolphin Exeter said, “ISAs and Peps have been such a valuable savings medium over the past 27 years and we advise clients never to miss a chance to use their allowance, either alone or as a tax-free zone within their portfolio. The total investable amount in ISAs and their predecessors PEPs over the last 27 years now stands at £200,560k”.[1]

Tim Walker said, “Saving in a tax efficient wrapper remains one of the most compelling ways of realising your long term financial ambitions. During its life, the WMA Balanced Total Return index has returned compound annual growth of 8.5% - despite the so-called lost decade for equities after 2000.  Even now, with the FTSE paying seven times as much income as bank deposits, we have assumed a more conservative 5% return and still an investor using their full ISA allowance each year could be a millionaire in 27 years with no tax to pay on their gains.  The importance of compounding, and the benefits of tax efficient saving, can deliver life-changing wealth to those who seize the opportunity.”
