Charity Golf Day Gains Olympic Support

Brewin Dolphin Plymouth announces its inaugural Charity Golf Day at Boringdon Park Golf Club on Tuesday 21st May, 2013 in support of the British Limbless Ex-Service Men’s Association (BLESMA).  On the day, there is the opportunity to enter a unique charity auction for the chance to win a half-hour diving lesson for up to 3 people at the Plymouth Life Centre with Olympic Coach Andy Banks.  The lucky bidder and guests will also say ‘hello’ to local Olympic Bronze medal winner and European 10m champion Tom Daley.  GB Team mates, Tonia Couch and Sarah Barrow, European 10m Synchronised Diving champions, will join Tom to meet the successful winners.

BLESMA campaigns for veteran’s rights, looking after individuals, their dependants and widows by offering a comprehensive grants and welfare system.

In Afghanistan, British servicemen and women − some as young as 18 years old − are suffering terrible, life changing injuries. Limbless veterans of all ages, even those recently wounded in Iraq or Afghanistan, are not only encouraged to walk again but to sail the Atlantic, to ski down mountains and to compete in the Paralympics for the country they fought for.

Brian James - ‘Head of Office’ Brewin Dolphin says: “We wanted to put something back into the community by organising this, our first-ever charity golf day.  There are already 12 teams of 4-ball entered but we are looking for more to help raise as much money as we can for BLESMA.  We are delighted to have received so many offers of prizes and support from our clients and business contacts which has been very generous. The ‘icing on the cake’ is the amazing experience being offered by Andy Banks and our Olympic Champions and I wish to take this opportunity to publicly thank each of them for giving up their valuable time for this great cause.”

The cost of the Golf day is £160 per team of 4 to include 18 holes followed by a two-course meal and prize presentation.

Access 21 revive Elliscombe House

Access 21 care interiors have worked their magic on Somerset based care home Elliscombe House and revived the property creating a beautiful space for its residents to enjoy. Read their story about this transformation.

The Project:

Independent Care provider Aurora Care Group acquired Elliscombe House, a 40 bed nursing home based in Wincanton in April 2012. The character period property was built early 1900’s and the house converted to a care home in 1985. Over a number of years the house was extended by way of two purpose-built wings. Set in an idyllic rural location with 7 acres of beautiful grounds and well maintained gardens it boasts spectacular views of the surrounding countryside.

What we did:

The previous owner had not made a great deal of investment in terms of interior design. Virtually every wall had been painted lemon which was bland and not in keeping with the age and style of the house. We used heritage paints to reflect the character and solid wooden furniture in the Entrance Hall in true arts and crafts style; and the theme brought together with the striking William Morris 'Tree of Life' tapestry hung over the fireplace.

As the original corridors were all painted the same there was no sense of identity for each area which we needed to address whilst ensuring a natural 'flow' to the home. Traditional dado rails were fitted to all corridor walls. This enabled us to use the same colour above the dado to achieve a sense of flow, yet contrast colours below for each corridor and artwork was themed to encompass this.Working on a refurbishment rather than a new-build project, means that we had to make sure there was as little disruption as possible to the day to day running of the home. Also to ensure that health & safety requirements were put in place to safe-guard the residents and not cause anxiety. To achieve this we worked in tandem with the care team by ensuring external contractors visits and deliveries were arranged at times to suit with minimal down-time.

We wanted to incorporate the grand features of the home and in particular the picturesque gardens. In the communal lounge where there are large windows, it was important not to fit curtains with frills or fussy pelmets to detract from the stunning views. Added features such as the matching set of vintage luggage in one of the corridors was emphasised by using a travel theme with appropriate artwork. This was a darker part of the corridor and the end result created a bright, lively and stimulating thoroughfare.

What the client said:

“We have worked with Access 21 Care Interiors on a series of projects over a number of years. This includes the hugely successful renovation of Hurst Manor which won the 2008 Pinder National Care Home Design Awards. We find them proactive in proposal, enjoyable to work with and always willing to resolve dilemmas cheerfully and sensibly.” Michael Lawson ,Managing Director, Aurora Care Group

Art Project Aims to Raise Profile of Local Artists and Funds for Charity

Front Row : Jeremy Jackson

Art, charity and travel have been combined in a unique collaborative project launched by Woodbury-based Jeremy Jackson with an illustrious career as an artist, writer and honorary pastor and former public relations executive spanning 30 years. Despite retiring six years ago, flamboyant Jeremy is far from taking it easy and his latest new venture combines two of his greatest passions – paintings and people.  As well as supporting a charity that helps orphaned and abandoned children in Tanzania, philanthropic Jeremy has now launched a new commercial business that will help raise funds for people with ear disease and deafness in Nepal.  The new venture, AventArt, will see Jeremy partner with gifted British artists across the UK to not only raise their profile but also much-needed money for the needy.  The first 7 artists signed-up are all based in Devon & Cornwall.

Jeremy says: “I want to showcase the high-quality work of living artists; whether amateurs who wish to move into a professional status or more established artists seeking wider notability.  AventArt is set to create a real buzz in the world of fine arts that will benefit many. It will inspire and delight – we are in the business of celebrating beauty – beauty of the human spirit and of the world around us.”

Jeremy’s latest project was, in part, inspired by local anaesthetist Charlie Collins who is raising money to pay for a hospital for the EarAid charity in Nepal. Jeremy, whose fundraising ventures have included a walk from Exeter to Land’s End and, is a great believer in business giving back to the community.  He says: “I felt I couldn't ask for any more sponsorship, so really another walk was out of the question.  So I decided instead to start a business which will be a commercial enterprise, with a percentage of the revenue going to charity.”

In a further development of the AventArt brand, two of the artists to join the project, Devon-based Peter Goodhall and Rebecca de Mendonça, are hosting a series of painting breaks in Italy during June and July this year.  Rebecca, from Exeter, and Sidmouth-based Peter are both experienced tutors who will be helping their students to brush up on a range of techniques, whatever their ability.  Each tutor will provide four hours of structured tutorial sessions each day in the stunning UNESCO World Heritage city of Ferrara.  Students will paint al fresco in the cool of the delightful hotel courtyard as well as having the opportunity of exploring the city, taking sketch books and boards to draw and paint new and exciting locations as the fancy takes them.

Rebecca has worked with some highly creative people, on some fascinating projects. These include sculpting the famous ceiling in Harrods food hall and producing work for Warwick Castle museum and Madame Tussaud's.

Peter works from his studio located on a Devon cliff-top; an idyllic and inspirational setting for his specialist art. His oil paintings of nudes in water concentrate on the sensual forms and patterns trying to capture the shimmering movements before they disappear.
