Pioneering Accountants are First to Launch New Mobile Website App for Business Owners & Financial Directors...

Last year Chartered Accountants, Haines Watts with over 30,000 UK clients and a network of 50 offices launched their iPhone and Android tax rates apps before their top 20 competitors - it leads the market again with the launch of its UK mobile website ahead of the other Top 20 firms of accountants. The new mobile enabled website app is aimed at business owners, FDs and financial controllers, giving instant and continuous access to the latest accountancy, tax and business information on their smartphones.

40% of all phones in the UK are Smartphones and estimates indicate that by 2013 more people will use mobile to get online rather than a PC. The new mobile website is a simplified version of the company’s main desktop site with uncomplicated navigation for Smartphone screens. The site contains up to date business news and views on blogs and useful information such as key tax dates, tax rates and tax tips.

Each office of Haines Watts operates independently offering a wide range of services tailored to the local market. In the South West peninsula Haines Watts has offices in Bideford and Exeter focusing on accountancy and taxation services to owner managed businesses and dealing with individual’s tax affairs. The Exeter office also has a specialist Forensic accountancy team undertaking work throughout England and Wales.

Ben de Cruz, Senior Partner Haines Watts Exeter says “We know that Smartphones are essential in day-to-day life and we want to continually make life easier for our clients. As business owners ourselves, we know that time is money and our mobile website makes it faster and more efficient to access important information. This is just another step in the process of driving efficient and more convenient accountancy and business services. At Haines Watts we make sure we give business owners what they want, when they want it and Smartphone technology is the ideal way to do this.”

Local Electrical Contractor Thriving Not Just Surviving!...

Electrical contractor, ‘Shout for an Electrician’ with its Head Office at Broomhill Way, continues to buck the trend with further expansion since the opening of the ‘Newton Abbot Appliance Repair Centre’ and Showroom premises on Brunel Industrial Estate 12 months ago. The latest acquisition is another new van from Vehicle Save Contract Hire & Leasing following the recent delivery of a fleet of four vans. ‘Shout for an Electrician’ has leased the latest vehicle to launch its 24/7 emergency service and taken on a new member of staff taking its number of employees from 11 to 12.

Established in 2007, the company is made-up of three divisions; Contracting, Electrical and Retail shop & Repairs, servicing both the domestic and commercial market. Corporate clients include blue-chip companies such as Burger King, Boots, Day Lewis Pharmacy, William Hill and the Co-operative covering a geographic reach from Plymouth to Bristol.

Andy Shout Director - ‘Shout for an Electrician’ says “We have maintained a presence in Torquay, Exeter and South Brent to service local customers, however since opening the new ‘Newton Abbot Appliance Repair Centre’ and showroom the business has exceeded all our expectations. The Repair Centre has proved successful during the recession and I think the main reason for this is that people are adopting a ‘make and mend’ attitude rather than being the throwaway society we have become. The good news is that we don’t make a charge to check faulty appliances such as vacuum cleaners and ghd’s and if we can’t fix them there is no charge to the customer. More often than not we can repair them on site at a reasonable cost saving substantial monies in replacement products. Also our pick-up and drop-off service is particularly popular with elderly customers.”

The latest acquisition of a larger van from Vehicle Save Contract Hire & Leasing can carry more stock for the 24/7 emergency service and will be branded to promote this services. This came about as a result of customer demand from business customers such as Burger King for their South West outlets.

A representative from Burger King says “The five restaurants Shout for an Electrician covers are always busy. If we have an electrical emergency or problem, even out of hours, they always attend within around 30mins. This is vital to ensure the safety of our staff and to allow us to continue trading with little or no disruption. This prompt and out-of-hours service is why we continue to use Shout for an Electrician.”

‘A Day in the Life’ - Jim Howard - Plymouth Chamber of Commerce - Chamber Link...

HIGH-FLYER JIM DRIVES BUSINESS FORWARD... With a busy schedule running two companies in the South West, and a proud owner of a Sportsman aircraft located at Exeter International Airport and a 1969 E-Type Jaguar Series 2 Coupe, Jim flies around the region quickly and in style...

7.45am: I drive to Exeter branch to sit down with the Contract Hire team for our regular review meeting.   Today we’re discussing the results of a survey we have carried out on vehicle fleets operated by local SME’s. It’s no surprise to discover many business owners still base their vehicle buying decisions purely on the cost of purchase which is usually a false economy as they need to look at the whole picture. This includes the value of the vehicle on disposal; fuel economy; maintenance costs; emissions levels; road-tax costs and even the tax and national insurance liabilities for both employer and employees. As a locally based and independent contract hire business we have the ability to give both existing and prospective customers totally unbiased advice in selecting the best and most cost effective solution in their choice of cars and vans.

11.30am: I arrive at the new Europcar premises in Millbay, officially opened last summer by the Mayor and conveniently situated close to the city centre and ferry terminal for the monthly managers’ meeting. Simon the Branch Manager gives James Eland my daily rental Operations Director and me feedback on how the new site is operating. He confirms the larger and more secure premises have increased the number of customers by 25%. Eric and Sean from Exeter and Taunton then join us - the individual Manager’s input is invaluable, particularly where an initiative can be adopted at each branch.  Europcar is focusing on improving the quality of customer service delivery at branches across the UK. It’s reassuring to know that our branches are consistently achieving a very high level of positive customer feedback.

1.00pm: A working lunch preparing for my next meeting.

2pm: A 1:1 meeting with Sarah O’Leary, the Waterfront Manager for the Plymouth Waterfront Partnership BID. This is a five-year, £6.2m investment proposal designed to give local businesses control of their trading environment, increase profitability and raise the profile of the area nationwide as a UK destination to help increase number of visitors and per capita spend. I invited Sarah in to learn more about the BID as I am keen to be part of these exciting plans; however our office is 200 yards outside the designated geographic boundary! Although very disappointed it proved to be a mutually beneficial discussion and I am happy to help and act as an Ambassador for this worthy cause. If successful, I believe it would have a positive impact on the local economy and business community.

3.15pm: I catch up on e-mails and telephone calls. I also prepare for a regular marketing meeting with Glen King our PR consultant which takes place in the morning.

5.00pm: I head back to Exeter and the David Lloyd Centre for a tennis lesson and work-out.
Jim Howard operates the SW Peninsula Europcar franchise and Vehicle Save Contract Hire & Leasing Limited an independent company specialising in long term vehicle contracts which complements daily rentals.

Chiefs Battle it out...

Chartered accountants, Haines Watts North Devon LLP set up a special coaching session with a difference for the first team squad of Bideford Rugby Football Club. The Bideford based firm which sponsors Craig Mitchell ‘Mitch’, a Wales international rugby union player for the Exeter Chiefs in the Aviva Premiership arranged for the International Rugby Star to join the North Devon first squad players to pass on his expertise in this popular sport.

Tight-head prop ‘Mitch’ joined Exeter Chiefs last summer after spending six years with the Ospreys. A current Welsh International with 11 caps to his name, the 26 year-old was part of the Welsh squad that played at the Rugby World Cup in New Zealand last year. Since arriving at the Chiefs, he has quickly established himself as a key forward in the much talked about Exeter pack. He has to date made 13 appearances for the club in all competitions and scored his sole try in their away win at Gloucester.

John Edwards Managing Partner – Haines Watts North Devon LLP says “Bideford Rugby Club is a valued client of ours and we felt this was a great way to help raise their profile in the local community, offer a unique and memorable experience for the players and add value to our longstanding relationship. The fact that ‘Mitch’ is a fellow Welsh-man made him a natural choice as the player to sponsor at the Exeter Chiefs!”

‘Mitch’ joined the Bideford players on his 26th Birthday for an exclusive two-hour dedicated training and coaching session at the club’s ground and says “As a rugby player a lot of your daily life is based around the work you do in training and preparing for games.  Learning calls and moves, working hard on things like your set-piece, they are all vital parts when it comes to bringing a team together. Thanks to Haines Watts, my sponsors, it’s great that I can try to pass on a few of the training tips that I have learnt with the Ospreys, Wales and also the Chiefs to the guys here at Bideford Rugby Club.”

Bideford Chiefs are in the Western Counties League and played their last game of the season at the end of April retaining the cup by beating Okehampton 51 - 17 in the league having narrowly lost to them twice and the ground was packed with a very large crowd of spectators. They finished 3rd and missed out in the play-offs by just 1 point!

Bideford Chiefs First Team Captain John Mock says “You don’t often get the chance to have the opportunity to have dedicated coaching from an international rugby star here in North Devon. The lads really engaged with ’Mitch’ and his tips and advice will prove to be a great help for next season and the Pre-lims. I hope all the players take-on his invaluable advice and work even harder on training techniques.”

Still Soldiering On...

GLEN KING talks to Topsham resident and veteran actor, Bill Pertwee MBE aka Chief Air Raid Warden William 'Put that light out!' Hodges from the vintage BBC sitcom ‘Dad’s Army’....
Born in 1926, William Desmond Anthony Pertwee is best remembered for his legendary role as the local greengrocer who rises up through the ranks to become a member of the Home Guard, set in the fictional seaside resort of Walmington-on-Sea during World War II.  Each week families across the length and breadth of the country would huddle in front of the ‘telly’ to watch yet another bumbling attempt from the haphazard Platoon unravel as they tried gamely to protect England from invasion by the ‘Jerries’!
The much loved comedy classic ran for 80 episodes from 1968 – 1977.  Written by the late, great David Croft and Jimmy Perry, the timeless one-liners created by this talented duo will go down in television history.  The unforgettable scene for most is when Ian Lavender, portraying the hapless Private Pike, was being interrogated by a German officer and ordered to give his name; Captain Mainwaring’s (pronounced 'Mannering') quick-fire response; “Don’t tell him Pike,” still makes me chuckle. The endearing Lance-Corporal Jack Jones (the local elderly butcher) played by Clive Dunn OBE is famous for saying; “Don’t panic Mr Mannering” and ‘They don’t like it up ‘em!”  Clive now sadly totally blind, lives in Portugal and is one of only a handful of the cast still alive today. “He couldn’t see very well and started bumping into things so eventually they got him a guide dog,” says Bill.  “I met up with him and he had a bandage on his forehead so I said, ‘Clive you’ve now got the dog to help so what happened?’ He told me, ‘I tripped over the bloody lead’!  Bill’s character, the antagonist ARP Warden, enjoyed wonderful dialogue such as; “now look ‘ere, Napoleon” and “ruddy ‘ooligans”.  Although the ARP Warden and local Bank Manager, turned pompous Captain Mainwairing, were arch rivals on screen; (and to be honest at times it was difficult to believe that they were both fighting on the same side), Bill confides that off camera, Arthur Lowe was one of his closest friends. “Arthur had a boat and we had lots of fun and parties.”
Bill a surprisingly sprightly and articulate 85 year old, was born in Amersham, Buckinghamshire and the family constantly travelled around the country as his late father was a salesman.  “He was a road surveyor and every six weeks or so would get a call and we had to move on again.  I didn’t go to school because there wasn’t the time.”  When he and his two brothers eventually settled in a beautiful Old Rectory located in Erith, Kent, Bill attended a Convent School. “At the end of the first term my mother said, ‘we’ve just had a look at your teacher’s notes on how you’re doing and it’s pretty hopeless isn’t it?  It says here that he doesn’t take anything in, just looks out of the window picking his nose and pulling funny faces!’
Bill’s first paid work was at the tender age of eight when the resourceful youngster asked a local builder if he could help by moving some bricks and was paid the handsome sum of sixpence.  A string of jobs followed including farming and working in Burberrys in London in the sports department.  After nine months he went into the stock exchange spending his time writing out copies.  “I met a lovely old chap who was always betting and gave me a ‘dead cert’ - I won quite a few bob! He got me into racing and because I was bored at work I started doing impressions of people especially sports commentators. I used to answer the phone and say, ’Good Morning, this is Raymond Glendenning here. We are just waiting for the infantry to come out on the pitch.’ One day a voice said, ‘Who’s that?’ and I replied Mr Pertwee.  The caller responded... ‘Take a fortnight’s notice,’ so I was really quite pleased about that.”
In 1954 Bill discovered the world of entertainment when he met his second cousin the late Jon Pertwee for the first time.  Famous for playing the lovable character Worzel Gummidge and the third Doctor Who, Jon was a big name on radio. “We got together for half an hour and discussed our family connections as our fathers were first cousins. He invited me to a party and Beryl Reid was there and she said to Jon, ‘I’m doing a revue at the Watergate Theatre to try out some material for a television programme’. I interrupted and said ‘excuse me I could write you some very funny material.’ So she gave me the name of the producer and I sent him one or two pieces.  He rang me and said, ‘we’re definitely very keen on one bit you’ve written for Beryl. You will get £2 pounds a week.’ And I said ‘good Lord, that’s marvellous just for writing a few lines.’ Then one Sunday I got a call from the producer saying the chap who was doing my piece had gone down with the flu and couldn’t talk so could I take his place?  I rehearsed with Beryl who was very impressed and I did six weeks.  They raised my money to £3 for the script and another £5 for the performance.”
By this time Bill had been well and truly bitten by the acting bug and went on to do a summer show at Gorleston near Yarmouth.  “I had to talk very loudly to be heard over the noise of the waves crashing against the sea-wall,” he reminisces. There followed a number of jobs in variety shows, a pantomime and comedy radio.  During his illustrious acting career he also appeared in two Carry On films.
Eventually he was contacted by Bill Worsley who produced Midday Music Hall for the BBC. “I did three programmes for Charlie Chester and then one called ‘Beyond our Ken’ with Kenneth Horne and Kenneth Williams.”  After a few more summer shows he received an unexpected call from an agent regarding a new and exciting television show written by Messrs. Croft and Perry.  “Mr Perry couldn’t make the meeting, but David did and he was absolutely charming and said there is a part of an air raid warden. They hadn’t really sorted everything out but he told me it would probably just be a couple of lines to start with and the money was about £8 pounds a week.”  Initially the show was called the ‘Fighting Tigers’ but Michael Mills, the Head of Light Entertainment did not like it.  Bill takes up the story... “Michael telephoned David Croft and said ‘I’ve got it! ‘Dad’s Army,’ I did just two lines and it was away from there.”  And the rest as they say is history!
A keen railway enthusiast and the vice-president of the ‘Railway Ramblers’, Bill moved to Topsham from Surrey three years ago.  “I came down to see some friends for four days and rather liked the place as it was chummy and so forth. When I returned home I thought I would love to go down there again and that was it; I was hooked. I think that Exmouth is a wonderful place and Topsham certainly.”  The move also meant he was closer to his son Jonathan and two teenage grandchildren who live in Cornwall.   Upgrading from Grockle to local, Bill has embraced the community spirit by getting actively involved in events such as giving talks at Topsham Library about his book, ‘Dad’s Army, The Making of a Television Legend’ and judging the 22nd Festival of Winter Ales in Exeter.
Awarded an HYPERLINK "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Order_of_the_British_Empire" \o "Order of the British Empire"MBE in the Queen's 2007 Birthday Honours list for his services to charity he still continues to work tirelessly to help good causes.  Today we meet at Station House, the Head Quarters of Devon in Sight which provides support and equipment to the visually impaired people across the County, conveniently located around the corner from his home.  Bill’s close association with the charity developed following a ribbon cutting ceremony he carried out in July last year to officially open the newly refurbished and larger Resource Centre. He has now been invited to be Vice Patron of the charity, a role he will take up with energy and vigour as he uses his influence and fame wherever he can to ‘open doors’ and fundraise for those less fortunate.  “I was asked to help Children’s Hospice (SW).  The charity was being charged rent for their place in Cornwall which was an absolute dump so I went to see the Council and managed to get it for free for them,” he laments with a shake of his head. “I also spent some time with a couple of people from the charity to go round collecting money from businesses. We popped into one company in Plymouth and the chap agreed to speak with me and then just handed over a substantial cheque for several thousand pounds.”
I personally have had the privilege of working with this outstanding gentleman on a number of occasions at charity events including the 170th anniversary of Exeter hearing specialist Broom Reid & Harris which raised funds for ‘Hearing Dogs for Deaf People’.  I watched spellbound as he held the audience captive with his lively anecdotes. “I was in a cab on the way to catch the train back to Exeter after filming in London and just wanted to quietly read the newspaper to relax and unwind,” he tells them. “The taxi driver, however, was a lifelong fan of Dad’s Army and didn’t stop talking for the whole journey.  He told me he had all the books and videos ... as I was getting out of the car at the station he said, ‘course you won’t be making any more now though... ‘cos you’re all dead!’
Yet the extraordinary Bill Pertwee still marches on... at the 90th anniversary of The Royal British Legion held at Exmouth Pavilions he was the special celebrity guest and helped to raise much needed funds for The Poppy Appeal.  Proudly wearing his trademark Air Warden’s tin hat (which is armour plated and weighs a tonne) with the original hand painted ‘W’ on the front, he was instantly recognisable. Although leaning heavily on a stick for support whilst awaiting a long overdue operation for an old injury to his foot, he walked with quiet dignity down the aisle towards the stage.  Accompanied by the sentimental and emotional Dad’s Army theme tune “Who Do You Think You Are Kidding Mr Hitler” the audience started to applaud as they got to their feet to give this legend a much deserved standing ovation.

Somerset Health Care Provider Expands Following Acquisition of Third Care Home

Somerset based health care providers Aurora Care which own and operates the award- winning Hurst Manor Nursing & Residential Home at Martock and purpose-built Hendford Care Home with Nursing in Yeovil has acquired a third business for its fast growing portfolio in Somerset.

Michael Lawson and Sue Aldworth joint owners of Aurora Care have completed on the acquisition of Elliscombe House, a 40 bed nursing home based in Wincanton which currently has a T/O of £1.25m. This now takes the group’s fee income to >£4m with over 100 beds and more than 200 staff.

Managing Director Aurora Care Limited, Michael Lawson says “Both Sue and I are delighted to have acquired Elliscombe House. This expansion is part of the mid - long term plans for Aurora Care and complements our existing portfolio of quality properties. We have taken on the existing 50 members of staff and look forward to working closely with Home Manager Jacqui Lloyd and her dedicated team. There are some great plans going forward and we are very excited about this new project.”

The character period property was built around the early 1900’s and the previous owner, Ronald Clarkson, acquired the property in 1988 from Mrs. Pickford who converted the house to a care home in 1985. Mr. Clarkson sympathetically extended the home in 1989 and 2005 by way of two purpose-built wings. He recently secured planning permission to create a single-storey bedroom extension to the nursing home for an additional eight bedrooms.

Set in an idyllic rural location within around seven acres of beautiful grounds and well maintained gardens boasting spectacular views of the surrounding countryside, it is also home to two resident and well-loved peacocks, Percy and David. Within the grounds is Elliscombe Park which was built in the late 1990’s and comprises a quality development of ten retirement properties all of which have been sold on a long 125-year lease and are part of the sale.

The sale of Elliscombe House was carried out by the Bristol Office agents Christie + Co. Specialist healthcare advisors dealing with all types of care homes, including a wide range of nursing, residential and specialist care homes both freehold and leasehold the company works from a number of offices across the UK and internationally.

Rob Kinsman, Director Christie & Co Bristol says “We acted on behalf of the previous owner, Ronald Clarkson who asked us to manage the sale and we are delighted to be part of Aurora Care’s expansion in the region. Elliscombe House generated a good deal of interest from acquisitive regional operators and our client elected to sell the business to Aurora Care given their excellent reputation in the area”.

The Future is bright for electrical contractor celebrating first anniversary in new premises

A rapidly expanding South-Devon based electrical contractor, ‘Shout for an Electrician’ celebrates the first anniversary of the opening of its Newton Abbot Appliance Repair Centre and Showroom on Brunel Industrial Estate with the delivery of four new vans. The new business premises were opened by owner Andy Shout in January last year following the merger of outlets based in Torquay, South Brent and Exeter.

The company which has 11 staff, has enjoyed excellent business growth over the last 12 months and is not just surviving but thriving in the current economic climate having increased turnover from £250k for the last 12 months to £400k for 2011 – 2012. It has been an exciting 12 months of positive changes for entrepreneurial local businessman Andy Shout which includes registering the business as a limited on company on 1st February and taking delivery of four new vans from Vehicle Save Contract Hire & Leasing which have been sign-written and fully fitted-out with ply-lining, bars, pipe carriers and trackers.

Andy Shout Director - ‘Shout for an Electrician’ says “It has been a very exciting year and the business is growing rapidly. We are getting more and more work in and as a result I am looking to take on more staff and further increase our fleet of vans. We have an established long-term relationship with Vehicle Save and I trust them; it’s not all about cost but the ongoing advice and after sales service they offer. The vehicles are very economical and the fuel savings we have made has already paid for one of the vans. The trackers are proving invaluable and I can accurately measure an increase in performance by 20%. We know where workers are and can divert them to emergency jobs if required which offers an efficient and prompt service to our customers. In addition by having contract hire I have a fixed budget with no hidden costs such as punctures or new tyres and I know exactly how much each van costs me by the hour! The other benefit is that I replace the vehicles after a three year period so the vans are always in good condition which reflects the quality of our brand, image and the service we provide, which is a very important factor.”

Jane Knight General Manager, Vehicle Save Contract Hire & Leasing says “We are a truly independent local business delivering a tailored service to SMEs in the South West for both leasing and daily rental. As a result we are well placed to offer customers totally unbiased guidance on the selection of the right vehicles for their business and within their budget, demonstrating flexibility and a bespoke service to our individual client’s requirement. The vehicles provided to ‘Shout for an Electrician’ are economical and improves the efficiency of the business by reducing downtime and fuel consumption. By having trackers installed, Andy can offer great benefits to his customers. He knows exactly where his engineers are located and how long they have taken on each job so there is no chance of overcharging so his customers get accurate billing. His business is going from strength to strength and we wish him every success going forward.”

Anniversary Event is ‘Music to the Ears’ for Care Home Residents

Yeovil-based Hendford Care Home with Nursing celebrated its second anniversary by opening its doors to friends and relatives of residents as well as the local community to raise monies to purchase equipment for its music therapy sessions. Health Care Provider, Aurora Care Limited extended the invitation to the residents of their second care home, Hurst Manor located in Martock who joined in the anniversary celebrations.

Visitors and guests joined Cllr. Philip Chandler - Mayor of Yeovil to enjoy many *activities throughout the afternoon with many stalls including a traditional sweet shop which proved particularly popular with the elderly residents. It was also an opportunity to look around the home to learn more about this state-of-the-art care facility based in the local community and a chance to meet the highly qualified and dedicated staff including newest team member, Carol Watkins. With extensive experience in dementia care and conflict resolution Carol attended the celebrations in her first official role as the newly appointed Matron of Hendford Care Home.

Cllr. Philip Chandler, Mayor of Yeovil says “One of the most enjoyable duties of a town Mayor is to help local people celebrate their special events. I had the pleasure of joining Aurora Care who operates Hendford Care Home for the first Birthday last year so it was a real honour to be asked back again to celebrate their second anniversary. The day was celebrated in style with many fun stalls raising money to purchase much-needed equipment for music therapy. Music is such an important part of people’s lives, especially those with dementia and it was a special day raising funds to look after very special people. It was a privilege to open the event, give a warm welcome to Carol Watkins and have the opportunity to thank the staff and volunteers for all the care, patience and dedication shown to those who reside in this wonderful purpose built facility.”

All proceeds together with monies raised from a charity raffle are to be used towards the purchase of equipment for the music therapy sessions for the residents as part of the activities’ programme organised by Activities’ Organiser Helen Ranger. Helen says “Music is widely known for promoting well being, reducing stress and offers inclusion. For dementia clients it can reduce frustration and aggressive behaviour. It is a sociable activity that anyone can be involved in, offering a way to exercise and can promote reminiscence, bringing people together for a social activity; helping relieve anxiety and frustration and to aid calm.”

Clinical Director Aurora Care Limited, Sue Aldworth says “It’s hard to believe that we have now been operational for two years. We have seen a lot of positive changes since opening in March 2010, including expanding the dementia unit in accordance with local market demand and taking on new team members such as Carol Watkins who will bring a wealth of skills and experience in her role as Matron. Our in-house Activities’ Organiser Helen Ranger has worked extremely hard to organise this anniversary event which celebrates the success of Hendford Care Home with Nursing and as a thank-you to residents, relatives, staff and supporters in the local community. We are delighted that Cllr. Philip Chandler - Mayor of Yeovil has shown his support by joining us once again to add a sense of occasion to a memorable day. In addition because of the generosity of our guests and visitors we have been able to raise much-needed funds for our music therapy sessions which are an integral part of working with our residents in a fun stress-free environment to encourage involvement and well-being.”
