EXETER SPORTING CLUB SUMMER 2014 DINNER

@ The Thistle Rougemont Hotel
Queen St, Exeter
Wednesday 11th June
7 - 11. 45pm

With special guest  former England cricketer MATTHEW HOGGARD MBE. A Leeds-born medium-fast bowler and right-handed batsman, "Hoggie" played initially for his local Club Bradford League before spending 13 seasons at Yorkshire CCC until 2009. He then captained Leicestershire from 2010 until his retirement last year. Along the way he won 67 England caps, the first in 2000, and also played in 26 One Day Internationals.

Working alongside Matthew in a quasi double act will be CHRIS COWDREY. The eldest cricketing son of England legend and life peer Colin (The Lord) Cowdrey (of Tonbridge) CBE, Chris was an all-rounder who played for Kent for 15 seasons until 1991. With only 6 England caps and 3 One Day Internationals to his name, some say he was unfairly treated in 1988 when, elected England Captain for the 4th Test of a 5 match Series against the West Indies who were already 2-0 up, England lost heavily by 10 wickets. After that one appearance he was injured and never chosen to captain or play for England again. For many years since, Chris has enjoyed a well-deserved reputation as an outstanding raconteur.

Bringing up the rear is JOSH DANIELS. Originally intent on becoming a professional musician, Josh's inate sense of humour began to take over and he started to write and perform his own unique brand of stand-up comedy. He has since established a fine reputation up and down the country as a versatile and talented entertainer who is particularly at home in the corporate and after-dinner market.

An event not to be missed!

FOOTBALLING SUPERSTAR SIGNS EXETER CITY SHIRT FOR CHARITY

English former football player and manager, Kevin Keegan OBE took time out from a ‘Southern Sporting Club’ lunch presentation held at Sandy Park to sign an official Exeter City football shirt. The footballing legend aged 63 was the keynote speaker at the sporting lunch hosted by David Duckham MBE, the former Coventry and England rugby player.

David Duckham MBE, PR consultant Glen King and Kevin Keegan OBE

The Yorkshire-born striker played for several clubs including Liverpool and Hamburger SV as well as being an England favourite. A football superstar of the Seventies, Keegan was as famous for his 'bubble' perm as much as his skills on the pitch.  He spent two seasons as a Newcastle United player and also had two spells as manager of ‘The Toon’.

Local PR consultant Glen King presented the City shirt to Kevin to sign on behalf of ‘The ‘Grecians’ to raise money for the club’s Football in the Community Charity.  Glen comments; “I have been attending David Duckham’s fabulous sporting events since the mid-nineties when I was working with Camelot, operators of The National Lottery.  I thought it would be a great opportunity to get a team shirt signed by a footballing superstar to raise much needed funds for the club’s award winning work in the community.  Kevin was both gracious and charming and very interested to see that Flybe is the club’s main sponsor. As part of his presentation he showed a picture of himself in his Newcastle strip on the Flybe Bombardier Q400 aircraft, which has the registration KKEV and flies between Newcastle and Gatwick.”

Niall Duffy formerly Director of PR and Communications - Flybe said: “The Kevin Keegan aircraft is still operating today. We named it after him back in July 2008, while he was in his second spell as Newcastle manager. It was an absolutely brilliant day and he is one of the most genuine people I’ve ever met.”

Exeter City FC Football in the Community works in collaborative partnerships to deliver inspiring physical activity, health and wellbeing and educational services for people of all ages across Devon. They work with 50,000 young people per year including homeless, young offenders, young people with addiction problems and in deprived areas.  They have 80 plus full time students at the club, wheel chair and blind footballers, ladies running clubs and football teams, teams for players with lower level mental challenges, multi sports coaching in small schools and so much more.

Bruce Henderson, Exeter City Football Club Business Development Manager, says: “We are very grateful to Glen King and to Kevin for taking the time to sign the Exeter City Football shirt.   Because of his generosity we are able to auction this and raise much needed funds for our Football in the Community Charity and enable the good works to continue.  The shirt will go to auction at our Gala Ball on the 4th May but we already have received a reserve bid of £500.”

Anyone wishing to place a higher reserve bid before the 4th May should contact donna.greening@exetercityfc.co.uk or telephone: 01392 413958
